Introduction

Adhi Lakshmi is the primal form of Goddess Lakshmi and the first of the eight divine forms known as the Ashta Lakshmi. Revered as the source from which all other forms of wealth and prosperity arise, she represents the eternal, original power of abundance. Devotees across India worship her for peace, stability and the grace that sustains a household.

Many families keep Adhi Lakshmi in idol brass in their pooja rooms, drawn by the warm golden glow of the metal and the calm presence of the goddess. Idol Brass brings this devotional tradition to homes and temples through handcrafted brass idols.

1. Who Is Adhi Lakshmi and How Is She Depicted?

The name Adhi means “the first” or “the primeval,” and Adhi Lakshmi is regarded as the original form of Lakshmi, sometimes identified with Maha Lakshmi. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is seen as the root of the entire Ashta Lakshmi family.

She is usually shown with four arms, seated on a lotus. Two hands hold a lotus and a white flag, while the other two are in abhaya mudra, offering protection, and varada mudra, granting blessings. She wears a crown and graceful garments, with a serene and compassionate face.

2. The Mythology Behind Adhi Lakshmi

Puranic tradition tells of the sage Durvasa, who once offered a divine garland to Indra, the king of the gods. Indra placed it on his elephant, which trampled it carelessly. Angered, Durvasa cursed the gods to lose their strength and prosperity, and Lakshmi withdrew from the heavens.

The gods then approached Lord Vishnu, who advised them to churn the ocean of milk, the Samudra Manthan. From the churning, Goddess Lakshmi emerged on a lotus, and she chose Vishnu as her consort. Her return restored wealth and order to the world.

3. Adhi Lakshmi and the Ashta Lakshmi

The Ashta Lakshmi are eight forms of the goddess, each governing a different kind of wealth: Adhi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santhana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi. Adhi Lakshmi leads the group as the original and sustaining form.

Her worship is believed to bring spiritual wealth, steadiness and the blessing of all the other forms together. She is often placed first when the Ashta Lakshmi are invoked in prayers and sacred recitations.

4. Adhi Lakshmi Temples and Devotional Traditions

The Ashtalakshmi Temple at Besant Nagar in Chennai is a well-known shrine where all eight forms of Lakshmi are worshipped in dedicated sanctums. Devotees visit it throughout the year, with special crowds on Fridays and festival days.

Lakshmi is also honoured during Varalakshmi Vratham, Navaratri and Diwali, when homes are cleaned, lamps are lit and prayers are offered to invite her blessings. Kolams at the doorstep and fresh flowers before the goddess are cherished customs in Tamil households.

5. Mantra and Worship Days of Adhi Lakshmi

A popular mantra for the goddess is “Om Shreem Adhi Lakshmyai Namaha.” Chanting it with devotion is believed to bring peace of mind, harmony at home and steady progress. Lakshmi Ashtottaram and the Ashta Lakshmi Stotram are also widely recited.

Fridays are considered especially auspicious for worshipping Lakshmi. Devotees light lamps, offer lotus flowers, sweet pongal or fruits, and pray with a calm and grateful heart.

Conclusion

Adhi Lakshmi stands as the eternal source of prosperity, reminding devotees that true wealth begins with grace, gratitude and righteous living. Her story of return through the churning of the ocean speaks of hope after loss. Worshipped in the temple or in idol brass at home, she brings peace, abundance and blessings to every household.
