UPTE CWA UCSF Healthcare Workers Still Facing H&S Dangers & Lack Of Pay Parity From UCSF

Dozens of UPTE CWA UCSF social workers rallied at SF General Hospital on September 23, 2026 to remember Alex Rangel, an UPTE social worker who was murdered nine months ago. They also charged that their members are still not protected on the job from physical attacks both at the hospital and also facilities outside of SF General. They reported that social workers working
outside in the community have received no protection from possible dangers. They also demanded parity pay for UPTE UCSF workers at the hospital and the
community.
The union had demanded that there be parity in the last contract negotiations
but the contract was settled without pay parity. They are now demanding again
that the City of San Francisco and UCSF provide pay parity for all UPTE social
workers.
Despite continuing health and safety problems Cal-OSHA has also not acted to
protect the workers.. There are less than 200 Cal-OSHA inspectors for California’s
18 million workers.
Additionally millions of Californians will lose their health benefits due to medicaid
cuts and ACA subsidies being reduced further threatening funding of patients
at SF General and the working class.
The UCSF Chancellor appointed by the Regents just received a 13.7% increase taking his salary to more than $750,000 and UC is also spending hundreds of millions to militarize the university system.
