July 28, 1866, our U.S. Congress authorized United States Colored Troops to officially join the regular US Army.
The 9th Cavalry and 10th Cavalry were organized as segregated regiments on Monday, September 21, 1866 as part of the US Army in both New Orleans, Louisiana and Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
Maj/Gen. Philip Sherdian was authorized to raise the 9th cavalry from soldiers within his own Civil War USCT command, the Military division of the Gulf, at New Orleans in 1866.
Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson, was authorized to raise the 10th Cavalry at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas
from the volunteer colored regiments that wanted to enlist in the regular regiments after the US Civil War.
Together, we pause and celebrate this momentous occasion. 160 Year Anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers, globally.
From American Legion Buffalo Soldier Post 333 - S.F. War Memorial Veterans Building we will serve at our Pacific Rim Headquarters building a full year long celebration for our Buffalo Soldiers 1866-2026.
Everyone is invited to join us in supporting this amazing journey of discovery, as we officially spotlight “the Summer of 1903” showcasing the legacy from the San Francisco Presidio, through the “Streets of San Francisco” to Yosemite, General Grants and Sequoia National Parks.
