Class & Discussion On The Banning of Factions By Bolshevik Congress of 1921
The DSA EB held a presentation and discussion on the banning of factions by the 10th Congress of the Party in 1921
In March 1921, with Russia devastated by three years of civil war, the Tenth Party Congress of the Bolshevik Party introduced a ban on factions inside the Party (the resolution On Party Unity). A left wing faction of the Party, the Workers Opposition, proposed that control of the economy be taken away from the Party and given to the Soviet trade unions. The Opposition was suppressed through the motion to ban factions, introduced by Lenin.
Before 1921, the Bolshevik Party had many factional disputes and factions were guaranteed representation on leading Party bodies. After the Tenth Congress, in 1922, Stalin became General Secretary and the Party soon became a monolithic entity crushing every internal oppositional tendency, the template for the actually existing “Communist” states of the present day.
