Stop California Forever’s Backdoor Deal Making

Proponents of a proposed new city in Solano County, California Forever, are aggressively lobbying decisionmakers to fast-track their project in one of the state’s most important regions for vernal pool habitats. As reported recently by CalMatters, California Forever is pushing for legislation to override or bypass environmental review and permitting requirements for its massive Solano County development, including its proposed shipyard, advanced-manufacturing complex, and potentially the 22,000-acre Suisun City expansion. The proposal reportedly would allow the shipyard expansion, which is located next to the ecologically important Suisun Marsh, to rely on an almost 20-year-old environmental impact report rather than conduct new project-level CEQA review, while imposing extremely short deadlines on state and local environmental permitting and accelerating legal challenges.

All this flies in the face of the local citizenry who passed an orderly growth ordinance back in 1984 and oppose the project. The legislation would set a dangerous precedent for land use decisions statewide and threaten renowned vernal pool habitat, wetlands, and marshlands within and next to this massive project.
