Artistic Free Speech Day Celebrated in Lafayette Park

(San Francisco, August 7) – About twenty five people met in the small, secluded amphitheater next to the Lafayette Tennis Courts. Some protest posters lined the perimeter and a separate one proclaimed that democracy is not for sale.

Just about every one of the people there was a talented singer, poet, actor or speaker. And all were treated to each others songs, skits, poems, or talks.

Many of us whose political coming of age was molded by Pete Seeger singing Banks of Marble heard the song once again, introduced as a song about “financialization.”

An IDF “soldier” wearing Israel, US and swastika shoulder patches gave an updated Charlie Chaplin’s speech to the Nazi army in the movie The Great Dictator. Not much updating was required.

There was a song addressed to those of Trumper orientation Because You’re Stupid. Others sang original and recited original poetry, all very accomplished.

A member from the SF Mime Troupe was there and performed a skit from their current offering.

A huge ball of fur came by to say hello.

Artistic Free Speech Day was officially recognized by the SF Board of Supervisors.
