How Children Have Been Caught in Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

When: Tuesday, July 21 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET

Where: Virtual event

The last time President Donald Trump was in office, his family separation policy at the border triggered fierce outrage among Republicans and Democrats when its harmful effects on children became clear. Now, more than a year into Trump’s second term, his immigration crackdown has shifted inward, and a series of groundbreaking investigations by reporters at ProPublica has uncovered the scale and scope of this shift and how it is impacting children.

Our reporting found Immigration and Customs Enforcement is detaining and deporting an increasing number of kids who entered the country as unaccompanied minors, thousands of immigrant parents have been separated from their U.S. citizen children and immigration officials deployed tear gas and pepper spray into crowds on public streets. We found at least 79 children across the country who were doused with the chemical agents.

In this session, Perla Trevizo, a reporter with the ProPublica-Texas Tribune investigative unit, will lead a discussion with fellow ProPublica investigative reporters to discuss what and who are driving the administration’s efforts, the effects new policies are having on children and what lies ahead. Submit your questions for our panelists when you register.

Speakers include:

Perla Trevizo, ProPublica-Texas Tribune reporter

Mica Rosenberg, ProPublica reporter

Lisa Song, ProPublica reporter

Nicole Foy, ProPublica reporter

Maya Miller, ProPublica engagement reporter
