Join this FREE walking tour that tells 200 years of San Francisco history through the words of Martin Luther King, jr. and the insight of Frederick Jackson Turner with his 1893 "Frontier Thesis."
MLK asked, "Who owns the oil, who owns the iron ore, who owns the water, who owns the land under the cities of America?"
The Frontier Thesis wondered what would happen to the psyche of White America when there was no longer a frontier upon which to escape to.
The Gold Rush was only possible because California didn't yet have a land office. The arrival of title to land in California in 1852 transformed the economy from self-employed opportunists to employees looking for work on the land that already belonged to others.
This tour surveys the migration to San Francisco by the Irish, the Jews of Europe, and every color of human being as nothing less than the pursuit of the frontier, spoiled by the land owner at the Strait of Hormuz, er . . . the rental office.
