It is my Chinese manager, Yoyo Chen, who introduced me to the work of Jonathan Lee, an artist immensely well-known and respected in China. A composer, author, guitarist, arranger, and band leader. He has collaborated with and written songs for dozens of other Chinese artists; additionally, he even founded his own acoustic guitar company.

Yoyo sent me links to several of his videos; the song “Hill” was among them and immediately captured my attention. A translation of the lyrics helped me connect with the poetry of its creator and how he expressed the concept of aging through words, images, feelings, and music.

In adapting and transforming this song into an instrumental guitar piece, the challenge was to preserve as much as possible of Mr. Lee's authentic phrasing, while conveying the emotion of the song instrumentally.

I'm unsure how well I succeeded, but I hope those who enjoy Jonathan Lee’s poetry will appreciate the way I let my guitar “speak” through it.
