What is the New Communism- A Presentation & Discussion
Saturday Sept 27 6pm-8pm
Revolution Books 2444 Durant Avenue Berkeley
Are you are anguished by everything Trump is doing? Don’t like capitalism, let alone Trump MAGA fascism, but do not see what we can do? Don’t know if a radically different, emancipatory world is even possible - haven’t past communist societies been failures?
If so, we are inviting you to this presentation and discussion on the new communism. There IS a way to a different world – bring your biggest questions.
Here are some key points and questions we’ll get into:
1) Many came to Berkeley because of its aura of free speech and critical thinking, and now find UC, along with other universities, the focal point of a big attack by the Trump regime. The government demands that IT decides who teaches and what is taught, and tries to stomp out critical thinking and and engagement with “inconvenient truths”. Why is this happening? What does it have to do with capitalism? What does it have to do with fascism?
2) What kind of society can we bring into being? What is possible for human beings on the planet? Unlike past socialist societies, in the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America (draft proposal) authored by Bob Avakian, there will be not just the right to dissent, but the government is required to fund its critics. You will not find this in any other constitution or founding document in any other government in the history of the world.
3) At the heart of the new communism is an evidence-based approach to understanding and changing society: proceed from objective reality and fearlessly follow the facts where they lead. Could you have a whole society with this as the prevailing way people see and interact with the world? This is quite different from communist movements and communist societies of the past. And today, Trump of course proceeds from what he says is true, reality be damned. And what about “who says it determines whether it is true” which has great currency among those who oppose Trump?
4) What do we need to do now to get to a different world? To act to defeat fascism? To lay the basis for revolution?
