The incident that occurred at noon on Tuesday, August 5, in Agios Nikolaos is deeply concerning, when a passenger of the Crown Iris cruise ship broke into a store owned by businessman Vasilis Hatzidakis and demanded the removal of an anti-Zionist banner from the window.
As the shopkeeper himself revealed, describing the incident frame by frame, speaking live on the show “Pame aria” with Thanos Korombylias, the incident had a clear political dimension, while he noted the complete absence of support from the local authorities and the Trade Association.
The banner in the shop window read:
“Peaceful Jews, welcome. Zionist murderer, go home.”
According to Mr. Hatzidakis, the banner had no racist intent, but condemned Israel’s Zionist policy in Gaza, pointing out that even within Israeli society there are people who resist, refuse to enlist and demonstrate against genocide.
However, a passenger on the Crown Iris — who declared himself a fanatic Zionist — broke into the shop, insulted the shopkeeper’s wife, pushed her, damaged a stand and then fled towards the port
Arrest, but also immediate release
After police intervention, the perpetrator was arrested ten minutes before the ship was due to depart, missing his boarding. However, he was released the same day, by order of the Prosecutor's Office.
"He didn't stay even one night inside. On the contrary, a man who attacked a woman, cursed and caused tension in a peaceful tourist town, left as if nothing had happened," commented Vasilis Hatzidakis characteristically on the show.
He was also particularly critical of the "pilgrimage-like welcome" of the local authorities to the Crown Iris, noting that this particular ship has a history of provocative incidents on every visit, with political interventions, symbols and tensions in the port.
"If one of us went to Israel and tried to take down a pro-Zionist banner, he would probably be attacked or arrested with summary procedures. Here, however, we demonstrate excessive tolerance for behaviors that offend our democracy and freedom of expression," said Mr. Hatzidakis.
He stressed that the city of Agios Nikolaos is and must remain peaceful, fair and respectful of diversity, expressing the hope that similar incidents will not be repeated.
