Throughout our Great State of California #California175 - comes alive sharing authentic California History at the transition from Mexican...
Native American, European, Asian, African, Pacific Islanders, Mexican and many others cultures journeyed to the lands of “Queen Califia” to establish the State of California.

California 175 offers a unique opportunity for everyone willing to come together and explore what makes California special.

California Admission Day once was broadly celebrated and widely attended affair worthy of inclusive historical preservation for all.

California 175 our unique 2025 California Birthday Day Party recalls the journey towards September 9, 1850 and opens a broader platform for another 175 years of our “California Grown” story.

📜 Proposal for the Formal Inclusion of the Descendants of American Slaves (DAS) in California 175 Commemoration

To Whom It May Concern,

As California approaches the 175th anniversary of its statehood, it is imperative that this historic commemoration reflects the full breadth of California’s founding stories, including those of the Descendants of American Slaves (DAS).

The DAS community represents a distinct lineage — those whose ancestors were forcibly enslaved within the borders of what became the United States. Their journey from bondage to self-determination is deeply embedded in California’s history, yet too often overlooked in mainstream narratives.

One of the most profound examples is Colonel Allen Allensworth, born into American slavery in 1842, who went on to found Allensworth, California in 1908 — the first town in the state established, financed, and governed by African Americans, specifically the descendants of the enslaved. His legacy is not just an African American achievement but a DAS legacy rooted in the pursuit of dignity, land ownership, and cultural autonomy.

✅ Proposal for Inclusion:

We formally request that the California 175 Commission:

1. Officially recognize and include the Descendants of American Slaves (DAS) in all historical narratives, exhibits, and commemorative events.

2. Establish a dedicated program or exhibit honoring DAS contributions to California’s economic, cultural, and civic development.

3. Partner with organizations like American Slaves, Inc. (ASI) to ensure the historical accuracy and representation of the DAS experience in California.

4. Promote public education that highlights stories like Allensworth and other DAS figures pivotal to the state’s growth.

✅ Why This Matters:

Without the intentional inclusion of DAS history, California 175 risks repeating the historical omissions that have long marginalized this community. Incorporating DAS ensures a more honest, inclusive, and educational commemoration — paving the way for a future California that honors all of its roots.

We stand ready to collaborate with the California 175 organizing bodies, cultural institutions, and educational leaders to bring this vision to life.

Respectfully,
