2/15 Mass Deportation as Ethnic Cleansing: on the Ongoing War

Iker Suarez – Black Agenda Report

The Trump raids have begun . In many ways, nothing is new. Despite liberals’ best attempts at depicting Trump’s policy as qualitatively different, what we are witnessing is merely an intensification of the bipartisan U.S. deportation regime.

In other words, “mass deportation” chants might be new, but mass deportations aren’t. During his first term in office, Trump deported fewer people than all previous three administrations. Later, Biden deported twice as many people as Trump. The only thing that substantively changes under the latter is the visibility of these processes. In short, liberals now care. Time for new photo-ops and selective outrage—if that....

4/12: LA’s Community Self-Defense fights ICE fascism

John Parker – Struggle-La Lucha

Los Angeles — There is an urgent need to build principled unity to confront the rising threat of fascism, a threat that spreads relentlessly like a virus, intensifying attacks on Black, Brown, and working-class communities at record levels.

While figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk may be the loudest voices advancing this agenda, the Democratic Party under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were complicit — funding and supporting Israeli genocide and deportations at home as tools of political control....

Know your rights when travel for citizens, green card and visa holders

  • U.S. citizens and green card holders have the right to refuse to answer questions from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and cannot be denied entry. However, those officers can cause delays for you.

  • According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), you are not entitled to an attorney under the first and second inspection by CBP. But you can request one, and it’s a good idea to have an attorney in mind.

  • Temporary visa holders can be denied entry to the United States for refusing to answer questions at the border.

  • If you’re a green card holder and immigration officials detain you while reentering the U.S., remember that only an immigration judge can revoke your green card. You have the right to request a hearing, but expect delays due to a backlog in immigration courts. Legal residents should never sign Form I-407, “Record of Abandonment of Lawful Permanent Resident Status.” Robinson said, if you are asked to sign an I-407, say, “No, I want to see a judge.”

  • Immigration authorities may ask to inspect your phone or laptop and could attempt to log in if you use your face or fingerprint to unlock your device. Consider turning off that feature and using a password. The ACLU has more advice on how you can prepare your devices for travel

    • Travel with as little data and as few devices as possible.

    • Encrypt devices with strong and unique passwords and shut them down when crossing the border.

Know your immigrant rights when stop by police, come to your home

  • Identify your emergency contacts and memorize their phone numbers.

  • Provide your child’s school or day care with an emergency contact to pick up your child.

  • Provide authorization in writing for your emergency contact to make medical and legal decisions for your child.

  • Tell your loved ones that if you are detained by ICE, they can try to use ICE’s online detainee locator to find you: https://locator.ice.gov/odls/#/search

  • Stay calm and don’t run, argue, resist, or fight the officer, even if you believe your rights are being violated or you are being treated unfairly.

  • Don’t lie about your status or provide false documents.

  • If you are pulled over in a traffic stop: Ask if the officer is from the police department or immigration. Immigration officers often identify themselves as “police,” but they are not police.

    • If you are a U.S. citizen or have lawful immigration status: Show your passport, legal permanent resident card, work permit, or other documentation of your status. If you are over the age of 18, you should carry your papers with you at all times.

    • If you are undocumented:  You have the right to remain silent and do not have to discuss your immigration or citizenship status with the police, immigration agents, or other officials. Anything you tell an officer can later be used against you in immigration court.

  • If an officer knocks on your door: Do not open the door. Teach your children not to open the door. Officers must have a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. ICE

  • If you are outdoors and think you see immigration officers nearby:

    • Move to a safe indoor space

Useful Immigrant Resources on Detention and Deportation

Useful Handouts and Know Your Immigrant Rights When Marches

Immigrant Marches / Marchas de los Inmigrantes
(By ACLU)

Immigrants and their supporters are participating in marches all over the country to protest proposed national legislation and to seek justice for immigrants. The materials available here provide important information about the rights and risks involved for anyone who is planning to participate in the ongoing marches.

If government agents question you, it is important to understand your rights. You should be careful in the way you speak when approached by the police, FBI, or INS. If you give answers, they can be used against you in a criminal, immigration, or civil case.

The ACLU's publications below provide effective and useful guidance in several languages for many situations. The brochures apprise you of your legal rights, recommend how to preserve those rights, and provide guidance on how to interact with officials.
