American prisoners could soon be bound for El Salvador’s jails

by South China Morning Post
“He has offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those with US citizenship and legal residency,” Rubio told reporters. “No country’s ever made an offer of friendship such as this.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump’s administration was ‘profoundly grateful’ for the ‘offer of friendship’ to house US prisoners

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has made the extraordinary offer to take in prisoners with US citizenship sent from the United States, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
There is virtually no precedent in contemporary times for a democratic country to send its own citizens to foreign jails.

But Rubio said Bukele, who has launched a sweeping crackdown on crime that has won him popularity at home and hero status in President Donald Trump’s circles, offered to do just that in their meeting on Monday.

“He has offered to house in his jails dangerous American criminals in custody in our country, including those with US citizenship and legal residency,” Rubio told reporters. “No country’s ever made an offer of friendship such as this.”

“We are profoundly grateful. I spoke to President Trump about this earlier today,” he added.

Rubio appeared to suggest that the prison transfer would focus on members of Latin American gangs such as El Salvador’s MS-13 and Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua who have acquired US citizenship.

“Any unlawful immigrant and illegal immigrant United States who is a dangerous criminal – MS-13, Tren de Aragua, whatever it may be – he has offered his jails,” Rubio said.

Bukele “has agreed to the most unprecedented, extraordinary, extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world,” Rubio said at a signing ceremony for an unrelated civil nuclear agreement with El Salvador’s foreign minister.

Trump has sought to crack down on the right to birthright citizenship, which is enshrined in the US Constitution.

A US official, speaking after Rubio’s remarks, said that the Trump administration had no current plans to try to deport American citizens, but said Bukele’s offer was significant. The US government cannot legally deport American citizens and such a move would be met with significant legal challenges.

Rubio was visiting El Salvador to press a friendly government to do more to meet Trump administration demands for a major crackdown on immigration amid turmoil in Washington over the status of the government’s main foreign development agency.

He arrived in San Salvador shortly after watching a US-funded deportation flight with 43 migrants leave from Panama for Colombia. That came a day after Rubio delivered a warning to Panama that unless the government moved immediately to reduce or eliminate China’s presence at the Panama Canal, the US would act to do so.

Migration, though, was the main issue of the day, as it will be for the next stops on Rubio’s five-nation Central American tour of Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic after Panama and El Salvador.
