why do anti-police activists continue to use pro-police software like Zoom?

by ∞ Genders 4 Black Communisms
Article about the ubiquity of Zoom in activist subcultures; some outdated links & stats have been updated.

since the global COVID-19 pandemic emerged, Zoom Video Communications has gained enormous popularity & market share as a tool to facilitate meetings, conferences, presentations, & other gatherings across long distances. along with its rapid expansion, Zoom has also taken major, public steps to ingratiate itself with the u.s. police state & its global servants.

in June 2020 — the middle of a massive anti-police uprising in the united states — Zoom publicly clarified that it would not enable encryption for free users in order to make it easier for anti-Black fascists to spy on those communications. in November 2020, Zoom followed this up by adding janet napolitano, the former #1 cop for the state of arizona & head of the notoriously evil u.s. department of “homeland security”, to its board of directors.

this remarkable degree of open collaboration with fascism has achieved results: according to Zoom’s most recent transparency reports, the company fulfilled over 89% of requests from cops.

yet despite all this, people who claim to be against the police have continued to freely use Zoom, when there are numerous free alternatives. why?
