The Nazi “Big Lie”: “There is no widespread Nazi ideology in Ukraine today.”

The Nazi “Big Lie”: “There is no widespread Nazi ideology in Ukraine today.”

The Nazi “Big Lie”: “There is no widespread Nazi ideology in Ukraine today.”

Hitler’s minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels was the advocate of the big lie -- “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/joseph-goebbels-on-the-quot-big-lie-quot

The New York Times reports:
In the months since President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia called the invasion of Ukraine a “denazification” mission, the lie that the government and culture of Ukraine are filled with dangerous “Nazis” has become a central theme of Kremlin propaganda about the war. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/07/02/world/europe/ukraine-nazis-russia-media.html

In Ukraine today there are streets, statues and museums all glorifying the memory of Stepan Bandera, a fascist Anti-Semitic Nazi collaborator who murdered thousands of Jewish and Polish people including women and children during World War Two. Bandera believed in an “ethnically pure“Ukrainian state, free of Jews, Poles, Roma and Russians, similar to the Nazi Aryan master race ideology

In 2010 Ukrainian President Yushchenko declared Stepan Bandera a Hero of Ukraine.

In 2014 the leader of the Svoboda Party, active in the Coup that overthrew the elected government, declared that Ukraine was controlled by the Russian Jewish Mafia. Following the coup, extreme nationalist and neo Nazis marched in Odessa chanting “out with the Jews” and proceeded to burn down a trade union building killing some 50 people.

Ukrainian soldiers have been regularly seen wearing Nazi symbols.

2018, Stepan Bandera's birthday was declared a Ukrainian national holiday.

by straw man
The title of this post puts "There is no widespread Nazi ideology in Ukraine today" in quotes as if someone actually said that. Who, pray tell? Only this article turns up in a search of that exact sentence. It's a straw man. Of course, there are Nazi's in Ukraine. There's lots of Nazis in the US, too, including in the military, in police departments, and so forth. We have monuments all over honoring racist slave owners and genocidal maniacs. Andrew "Trail of Tears" Jackson is on our $20 bill. Hitler admired US racism and modeled Nazi laws on US legislation. When lieutenant William Calley was originally sentenced to life in prison for the My Lai Massacre, governor Jimmy Carter protested the sentence by instituting American Fighting Man's Day, and asked Georgians to drive for a week with their lights on. Fascists in the US are ascendant today and neo-nazis regularly slaughter dozens in lone wolf attacks.

Here are a couple of relevant facts that seem to be left out of this piece. Yushchenko was a puppet of Russia and rightly run out of Ukraine, although, yes, a significant proportion of those involved in the uprising were Nazis and they did some horrible things such as torching the trade union building in Odessa. There are Nazis in Russia, too. Also, it wasn't mentioned that the Ukrainian people elected a Jewish president (which the US never has).

The larger question is, what's your point? Are you arguing that the invasion of Ukraine was justified? That is should just fold into Russia and subject itself to Putin's reign of terror forevermore? That the rationale for the attack offered by Putin is sincere and legitimate, that Putin, a murderous oligarch and autocrat who is currently throwing tens of thousands of Russian prisoners into a land-grab meat grinder, and has committing massive war crimes in Chechnya, Syria, and now Ukraine, is genuinely interested in "de-nazifying" Ukraine? Get real, tankie.
