Unnecessary Overpriced Housing in Sonoma County
This reading brings to light the unfair housing situations and overpriced housing challenges present in Sonoma County.
By Mericia Cano
All throughout Sonoma County you can drive down roads and through the community and you see hundreds of houses and apartment complexes being built. Even at Sonoma State you see houses being built across campus and pretty much down all of Petaluma Hill Road.
According to Realtor.com a new upcoming neighborhood Meadowcreek Community is being built in Petaluma. These homes are estimated to be sold at a little over 2 million dollars and are expected to begin construction later on this year, you can expect that these homes are made for the individuals who mostly fall within the highest income 1% category (the elite).
Instead of building new luxury homes I think Sonoma County should focus on making more affordable housing. The more luxury homes that are being built, will keep building an overcrowded and expensive place of living. This inconvenience is already a worry because Sonoma County is already struggling to keep tenants with growing prices and is known for the outrageous amount of homelessness rates. This happens because of things like unnecessary housing prices rising and little affordable living available, these new homes should be turned into affordable and simple housing instead of housing for ‘millionaires.

I am originally from the Central Valley of California in a small little farming town of Lindsay. I moved to Sonoma State and currently live in Rohnert park. I have 2 siblings and come from Immigrant parents who settled in the valley. I am currently a 2nd year sociology student and WGS minor.
