Climate disruption and nuclear weapons are the two human-created disasters that could end life on Mother Earth, yet this moment is an opportune time for the climate justice movement and the anti-nuclear movement to join together.
From Standing Rock to Afghanistan, Kashmir, Palestine, Bosnia, Yemen and beyond—wars and violent conflict have become shamefully commonplace, and most of them impact people of color first and foremost. The wars have followed “conventional” rules of engagement—bullets and bombings, all resulting in death, human misery and environmental destruction largely isolated within the area of conflict.
The war in Ukraine represents a nuclear threat. Nuclear war is indiscriminate of the color of our skin—it is a threat to the sacred system of life itself. Nuclear winter is the last epidemic humanity will ever face. Kremlin insiders have sounded the alarm about the instability of Vladimir Putin, though only some of this has reached the media.
Movement Rights’ colleagues at some of the highest levels have shared concern that Putin is acting independently, and we are closer to nuclear war than at any time in history.
SPEAKERS:
Cynthia Lazeroff, Founder of Women Transforming Our Nuclear Legacy and NuclearWakeUpCall.Earth;
Greta Zarro, Organizing Director, World BEYOND War
Ira Helfand Co-President, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
