Asian Hate Is on the Rise

by Christine Thach
This article is about recent hate crimes that have been happening towards older Asian people. Many Asians have been getting attacked because COVID happened, and many people assume that every Asian have COVID-19.
Ever since COVID happened, many hate crimes towards Asians have been multiplying. The age group of Asians being targeted comprises older people ages 65 and older because they are more vulnerable and cannot fight back. As an Asian American myself, it is very concerning to see other Asian people being attacked for no apparent reason. These attacks could’ve been against me, my friends, or my family.
Asian hate crime has increased by a staggering 169 percent since 2020. It is very shocking to see this percentage of Asians being attacked because what if COVID never happened? Would Asians be attacked like how they are being attacked right now? New York, with the most Asian population, had the most hate crime. They had 13 hate crimes in 2020 to 42 hate crimes which is a 223 percent increase. San Francisco has the most second-most Asian population, also had a surge of five to 12 hate crimes, a 140 percent increase.
Recently in San Francisco, two old ladies ages 65 and 85 were waiting for the bus, and a 55-year-old man named Patrick Thompson stabbed both of the ladies. But luckily, they both survived, but they were severely injured. One of the victims had a knife stuck in her hand while the other victim was stabbed in her stomach. Boston and Los Angeles came in third as hate crimes against Asians went from 60 percent to 80 percent. A recent pew report study shows that about one-fifth of Asian Americans directly attributed the attacks to former President Donald Trump and his "China virus" rhetoric. Tran said that while Trump created a "nightmare scenario" of normalizing racist remarks and behaviors, the surge of hate crimes and anti-Asian racism, in general, can't be pinned to any single cause.
