Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
Since the start of the pandemic, Anti-Asian Hate Crimes have been on the rise. Many Asian-Americans are being attacked, yet many of the crimes are not being reported.
Anti-Asian Hate Crimes
By: Christiana Buyson
In the past year, increasingly covid-related attacks have been directed at Asian Americans.
The United Nations issued a report that there has been a rise of racially motivated violence and hate crimes against Asian Americans. However, it is difficult to calculate the exact numbers for these crimes since the government and organizations have not tracked the issue long-term. The advocacy group Stop AAPI Hate said it received more than 2,800 reports of hate incidents directed at Asian Americans nationwide last year.
Many of these hate crimes occur in California. Over six million Asian Americans live in California, according to the latest population estimates, by far the most in any US state. According to a report released by the Asian Pacific Policy Planning Council, from March to May 2020 alone, over 800 Covid-related hate incidents were reported in 34 counties in the state. California congresswoman Judy Chu, chair of the Asian Pacific American Caucus, called the recent incidents "a crisis point" for the community. She and other lawmakers are pushing for the US Department of Justice to expand efforts to report, track and prosecute hate crimes.
In conclusion, the rise of Anti-Asian hate crimes has taken a toll across the United States, especially for California. However, many crimes have not been reported and are not known to the public. This is a major issue because the media does not want to show how Asian Americans are being treated. What needs to be done is spreading more awareness, and having media outlets where they can share the news.
