We won Pacifica and KPFA back, but --??
Elected representatives at KPFA refuse to meet, while other Pacifica stations' Local Station Boards meet on Zoom.
Yes we won our democratic governance back.
But here at KPFA we are having a problem. The forces at KPFA which sponsored these "new" bylaws, the deceptive campaign for them, and the wildcat attack on and attempted takeover of WBAI, are still trying to destroy democratic governance by refusing to hold the legally required Local Station Board meeting. The KPFA LSB has a majority of members affiliated with the Save KPFA/United for Independent Radio faction.
The leader of the faction is Donald Goldmacher of the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club, one of the leaders of the raid on WBAI.
That majority cut down the monthly LSB meetings to every other month, as the bylaws only require meetings every 60 days. There reason is that they don't believe the LSB should govern the station, only the paid staff, and they have a General Manager, Quincy McCoy, who believes likewise, and that he should be able to dictate governance matters. He doesn't attend LSB meetings nor give regular reports, and those he has given had a hostile, autocratic stance. He has had been few or no staff meetings.
Other stations have held their LSB meetings with Zoom, while the KPFA LSB cancelled their March meeting, and are refusing to meet this month; their last meeting was in January, and they don't plan to meet again until (they say) the end of April - 4 months without meeting. The Rescue Pacifica slate members have been trying to schedule a meeting but with no cooperation from the other group, which is very upset about losing the bylaws vote, and is (again) in a struggle to prevent RP Pacifica National Board director Tom Voorhees from their station from taking a seat on the National Finance Committee or even his seat on the PNB. He is an active member of the national Grassroots Radio and a technical expert in radio who volunteers his time traveling around the nation helping local low power stations with setup and maintenance.
During elections, it is possible to file Fair Election complaints against parties who participate in violations of the Fair Election rules (with mixed results), but what do we do now, between elections, with a group of officials we elected who refuse to govern, and have a history of trying to take the station out of the Pacifica network and run it themselves autocratically, by means of strategies of bankrupting the network - their latest scandal being the failure to pay property taxes for 7 years, almost causing the auction off of KPFA - , plus obstructing effective governance and finance?
