"Paint It Down" Rightists Disrupt Victor Arnautoff Mural Meeting In San Francisco

Supporters of destroying the Victor Arnautoff murals at George Washignton High disrupted a presentation being made by labor historian and author Robert Cherney at ILWU Local 34 in San Francisco. The meeting was part of LaborFest which commemorates the San Francisco 1934 general strike.

The demand to “Paint It Down” was endorsed by the unanimous decision of the San Francisco Unified School Board and support by the Superintendent Matthews who set up a “Reflection & Action Group”. This hand picked committee was packed by people who wanted to destroy the mural and accused people who wanted to preserve it of being “white supremacists”.
