Pro-War S.F. School Board Intends to Destroy Arnautoff mural
by Abolish J.R.O.T.C.
Monday May 13th, 2019 12:04 AM
The pro-war San Francisco Unified School District's Reflection and Action Working Group voted 12 to 1 to destroy Victor Arnautoff's outstanding, realistic historical mural at Washington High School in the name of promoting SFUSD values, which values certainly include their promotion of the military in our public schools known as Junior Reserve Officer Training or J.R.O.T.C., which has been protested over the years to no avail.
For the latest update on this contempt for art which depicts the terrible reality of American history that all Americans should learn as early as possible, see

Victor Arnautoff (1896-1979) was a well known, much admired anti-fascist artist who stood up to the anti-Communist witch-hunting congressional committee, the House Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC) to defend his art, and Stanford University, where he was employed as a professor, refused to fire him, a courageous position at the time. His biography may be found at:

So now we know for sure exactly what the SF School District's values are. They support the racist, anti-intellectual, anti-culture United States military, which destroys art around the world, including most notably during its recent illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. It supports the killing of the people of the world to maximize the profits of the oil companies and the munitions makers, the only reason the military exists. This military training gang exists at Balboa. Burton, Galileo, Lincoln, Lowell, Mission and Washington High Schools. This is certainly in keeping with their attempt to destroy Victor Arnautoff's excellent murals. Clearly, it is J.R.O.T.C. that must be abolished and Victor Arnautoff's murals, all of them, that must be saved and treasured.
