Homelessness in California: A Problem We Can Solve?

by Yannick McGhee (yannickmcghee [at] icloud.com)
Fighting Homelessness Through Services and Housing Act is a new bill proposed to Congress to help curb the issue of homelessness.
Homelessness in America has become such a problem, that Congress has finally started to address this issue with a new legislation. A bill was proposed by Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Ted Lieu which would give approximately 750 million dollars to local governments and municipalities to provide services like housing, rehabilitation centers, and mental health facilities. This is not the first homeless bill, but we have not seen a bill about homelessness that focuses on housing and getting people off the streets. The bill will not completely end homelessness, but the goal is to slowly curb one of our society's most pressing issues.

Most Californians have seen first, hand the rise in homelessness, especially in major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco. That is why this bill is so important because it will be the first major step in curbing an issue that has been plaguing our community. Experts say that if this bill passes it will help ease pressure of law enforcement, hospitals, and social services that don’t have the adequate resources to deal with these problems. While some critics say that 750 million dollars is not nearly enough money, homeless advocates say that its is a good start. On top this Governor Gavin Newsom has claimed that an additional 500 million will be used to help curb the issues of homelessness at the state's expense. Advocates for ending homelessness have expressed excitement over these propose funding, but we will have to see how this plays out. Only time will tell if this funding will help curb homelessness, but it seems to be major step in the right direction.
