Sunday Morning at the Marxist Library

The Primary Route in 2020

In 2015, prior to the Sanders candidacy, Tom Gallagher authored a political pamphlet entitled, The Primary Route: How the 99% Take on the Military Industrial Complex. Examining the history of third party presidential campaigns as well primary challenges within the Democratic Party, it emphatically advocated the "primary route" as the appropriate response to the specific structure of the American political system.  Gallagher's joke is that his deal with the devil was that either the book would be a commercial success, or the course that he advocated would be a political success -- but not both.  We know how that turned out -- and it was by far the preferable outcome.
Although the success of the Sanders campaign -- far exceeding the expectations of Gallagher, and almost everyone else -- would seem to have proved the book's point, there will, of course, be those still opting for a third party route.  Gallagher will address the question of why he respectfully disagrees and why he regards participation in primaries (and caucuses) as the “safe” option, in which candidates of the left are less likely to see their message overshadowed by the perceived danger of their efforts ultimately making matters worse by inadvertently helping to elect a Republican – a debate that has continued for nearly twenty years since Ralph Nader’s 2000 run.
He concludes that the current level of public discussion and appreciation of democratic socialism -- beyond anything seen in almost a century -- is due to the American left's acknowledging that wishing for a parliamentary system would not make it so, and instead embarking upon a course that better fit the really existing political terrain.
The question of the moment is whether this breakthrough will ultimately prove to be just a one-off historical anomaly or the beginning of a lasting sea change in American politics. Will the future include an American left consistently able to navigate the often murky challenges of real world politics? Or does it fall back to its traditional, largely non-participant critique, generally delivered from the margins?
Tom Gallagher is a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, a Bernie Sanders delegate to the 2016 Democratic Convention. and current member of the Progressive Democrats of America, and the Democratic Socialists of America.

What is any promotion of the twin parties of war and fascism, the Democrat-Republicans, doing at a Marxist library? The Democratic Party is funded by the same capitalist class as the Republican Party to carry out the same war abroad and police state at home agenda, with some Democrats mouthing decent phrases at election time to make sure we never vote socialist (Peace and Freedom) or Green, but once elected, carry out the same capitalist agenda as the Republican Party. The Democrats exist to make sure we never vote socialist or Green. Bernie Sanders said so himself; he is running to make sure more people vote Democrat. Sheepdog Sanders has no intention of becoming president and did not have any such intention in 2016. The Democrats certainly never campaign to end the military-industrial complex, which they staunchly support, including Bernie Sanders, who is infamous for supporting military contractors in Vermont and everywhere else. Here is your information on Sheepdog Sanders. Please take the time to read these excellent websites:

“One major contradiction in Sanders' opposition to out-of-control military spending has been his support for the world’s most expensive and wasteful weapon system: the trillion-dollar F-35 fighter jet. Not only did Sanders support the F-35, he pushed—despite local opposition—to get these fighter jets stationed at the Burlington airport for the Vermont National Guard.”
“Open Secrets shows Sanders taking in over $366,000 from the "defense industry" during his 2016 presidential campaign, but only $17,134 for his 2018 Senate reelection campaign.”

Here is more on Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Party’s condemnation of the legally elected government of Nicholas Maduro.

Sanders referred to the late Hugo Chavez of Venezuela as a "dead Communist dictator." See

Sanders supported this anti-Venezuela resolution:

Sanders claims Maduro is anti-democratic:

Sanders supports the military's F-35, opposed by the people of Vermont:

The entire US Senate, including Bernie Sanders and Elisabeth Warren, voted for the Nicaraguan Investment Conditionality Act of 2017, HR1918 (NICA) in November and December 2018, to help the CIA gangsters promote their effort to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nicaragua, a government that is despised by all anti-communists although it is not a communist government.

The latest crop of Democratic Party presidential candidates are equally anti-Russian, including Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The stances on Russia on the part of these anti-Russian candidates are more fully described at:

One correction to the above article is that the events of 9/11/01 were an Inside Job.
