Sights and Sounds from Oakland's 5th Annual Reclaim King's Radical Legacy Events

by Dave Id
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Oakland on January 21, 2019, the Anti Police-Terror Project hosted a powerful and moving day of civil rights speakers, marches, children's activities, drums, music, song, and dance. In tribute to families who have lost loved ones to police violence, guns were melted and cast into into stars, displayed in a pattern recreating the constellations visible in the night sky when Oscar Grant was murdered ten years ago. These video clips capture some of the sights and sounds from morning and evening events.

In the first video, Cat Brooks and Tur-Ha Ak close out the day's events. Cat thanks everyone for their work and creative expression since 8am in the morning. She speaks of the need to fight for justice every day, not just on the MLK holiday. She reminds those in the plaza amphitheater that Oakland is Panther town. Tur-Ha says that we are in a moment where everything we've talked about can come to fruition, but it depends on the realization that the people run shit, not those in City Hall. Cat closes with a chant of "I believe that we will win!"

Photos and audio from rally speakers and the main march will be posted in the near future.

Note that the shovels used in the dance were cast from guns previously melted by the same kiln used on this day to melt at least three more handguns.
