On First Day of New Year, Oscar Grant Honored at Fruitvale BART Station
On January 1, 2009, 22-year-old Oscar Grant was shot in the back by BART Officer Johannes Mehserle while another officer held him down.
After Oscar Grant was shot by a BART officer, it was due in large part to protests of outrage that Johannes Mehserle was charged with second-degree murder. He was ultimately convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
Ten years later Grant’s mother Wanda Johnson hosted a vigil with supporters at Fruitvale BART station where he died. In honor of the victim, many people remembered the man who was pointlessly murdered, including his daughter Tatiana Grant, who was only 4 years old when her father died.
Grant was killed in the early hours of the year 2009. Supporters said they are hoping that one day Fruitvale station will be renamed Grant Station.
