Homelessness has increased while President Trump has been in office

By Lynda Carson - December 18, 2018

Oakland - This Christmas holiday season, homeless encampments can be found in various spots throughout Oakland including a good sized homeless encampment with tents near 12th Street, over-looking Lake Merritt.

It should be no surprise with all the crooks involved in the Trump Administration looting our nation from here to hell that homelessness is on the rise across the nation. There are a lot of people hurting that have been abandoned by local, state and federal government programs. They need assistance, and they need a roof over their heads.

Unfortunately, making matters worse President Donald Trump has threatened a federal government shutdown that may occur in a few days around December 21, 2018, which threatens subsidized housing programs across the nation, and in the Bay Area.

According to the newest December 2018 report on homelessness from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), homelessness in the United States has increased under President Donald Trump, with the largest numbers of houseless/homeless persons residing in California and New York.

Reportedly, on a single cold night in January 2018, around 552,830 people experienced being houseless/homeless in the U.S., with half of all persons experiencing being houseless/homeless residing in five states including California (24% or 129,972 people); New York (17% or 91,897 people); Florida (6% or 1,030 people); Texas (5% or 25,310); Washington (4% or 22,304 people.

The number of Americans experiencing homelessness in unsheltered locations increased for the third year in a row between 2017 and 2018, with nearly half of the unsheltered people in the country being houseless/homelessness in California (47% or 89,543 people).

Additionally, Oakland,Berkeley/Alameda County had 5,496 persons experiencing homelessness on a single cold night in January 2018, and with rents so high in the area homelessness is expected to increase as greedy landlords continue to jack up the rents to unreasonable rates.

According to Rent Cafe, currently the average rent for an apartment in Oakland is $2,527, being a 3% increase compared to the previous year, when the average rent in Oakland was $2,442. The average outrageous rent for an apartment in Berkeley is $3,123, a 2% decrease compared to the previous year, when the average rent was $3,172.

Memorials for the houseless/homeless who died or have been killed on the cold hearted streets in our communities are presently taking place across the nation. As a direct result of the loss of our public housing and the so-called affordable housing projects that discriminate against low-income persons with disabilities, or require minimum income requirements for the poor, homelessness will continue to increase.

Additional reasons that houseless/homeless persons are living on the cold streets of America is because public housing and section 8 tenants face eviction and homelessness for medical marijuana use.

§Homelessness increase stats...
by Lynda Carson
Just in case...

(LC)

Homelessness increased (though modestly) for the
second year in a row.

The number of homeless people on a single night increased by 0.3 percent between 2017 and 2018. The increase reflects declines in the number of people staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing programs being offset
by increases in the number of people staying in
unsheltered locations. Between 2017 and 2018, the
unsheltered population increased by two percent (or 4,300 people).
