Current Headlands Artist in Residence Shimon Attie mines the fraught relationships among place, memory, and identity, inviting viewers to reconsider complex histories and urgent social issues. With a signature visual richness, his site-specific works are at once gripping, subtle, poetic, and profound. Tonight, Attie talks about his current work: a floating media installation that will circulate in waterways of New York City this September and upcoming site-specific commissions in Norway. He also touches on previous projects, including his influential Writing on the Wall (street projections in Berlin's former Jewish quarter) and Facts on the Ground (light box installations across Israel and Palestine), as well as other projects on Syrian refugees in Europe and race relations in the U.S.

Copresented by Headlands Center for the Arts, Berkeley Arts + Design, and the UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice.
