Boycott Continues at East Bay Coffee Co. Over Illegal Firings and Sexual Harassment

by Dayton Andrews
A worker was fired from the company four weeks ago after he refused to serve a customer who had groped and verbally harassed a co-worker. The co-worker had been told to hide in the kitchen if she was uncomfortable with the harassment.
Community members are being advised to boycott the establishment until management offers to rehire fired worker, provides compensation for lost wages, and issues a public apology.

Boycott Continues at East Bay Coffee Co. Over Illegal Firings and Sexual Harassment at Church-Coffeeshop

Supporters of fired workers at the East Bay Coffee Co. will be holding their fourth weekend of protests in front of the part-business part-church at 2529 San Pablo Ave in Pinole, starting this coming Saturday, June 23rd, from 4 pm-6PM and the following morning (Sunday, June 24th) from 10am-12pm.

A worker was fired from the company four weeks ago after they refused to serve a customer who had groped and verbally harassed a co-worker. The co-worker had been told to hide in the kitchen if she was uncomfortable with the harassment.

Community members are being advised to boycott the establishment until management offers to rehire the fired worker, provide compensation for lost wages, and issue a public apology.

The first week workers confronted the owner-reverend and his wife. Both denied the firings, but a worker on site retorted that the reverend/boss had told him in person that he and the others were fired.

Video of the exchange can be found on the facebook page created by the new community organization “workers against sexual harassment (WASH) at https://www.facebook.com/Workers-against-sexual-harassment-WASH-320249101841956/ (one minute and fifty seconds)

Community support for the protests last Saturday and Sunday was strong, with about half of customers refusing to enter the business after hearing about this outrage. Neighbors have complained for years about the establishment, which is also known as the Pentecostal “Church of the East Bay,” because of the parking nuisance that the church and coffee house blend has brewed.

The protest comes as resistance continues to build around the #meToo movement. This past week, a petition was released by University of California Santa Cruz students against at professor who used his position to sexually harass and abuse female students.
