THE BAIL TRAP: American Ransom (Brave New Films, 2017, excerpts from 6-part series, USA)
Money bail is one of the main causes of mass incarceration in the United States. The reality is that as many as 70% of people in jail in the U.S. have not been convicted of a crime but are awaiting trial. Low-income people are sitting in jails for days, months, and even years simply because they can't afford to pay high bail amounts. And those who can make bail are enriching private insurance companies to the tune of billions each year. This must end.
Discussion to follow the film.
Panel: Discussion led by local experts
Event Hosts: Santa Cruz County Branch of NAACP, Santa Cruz Indivisible Black Lives Matter Advocates
Presented as part of the Reel Work May Day Labor Film Festival.
