Protest Calls for Stricter Gun Laws: High Schoolers Rally in Rain
Gunn High School in Palo Alto was the scene of a before-school rally for stricter gun laws on February 26. The irony of the name of their school was not lost on the students; many signs reflected that, including one that said "The only gun in our school should be the name of Henry M. Gunn".
About 150 people, mostly students from Palo Alto's Gunn High School, rallied in wind and rain at the early hour of 7:30am, an hour before the start of the school day on Monday, February 26. They were making a plea for stricter gun laws in the wake of the recent South Florida school shooting. Even the school principal, Kathleen Laurence, talked to demonstrators during the rally to show her support.
Students faced the corporate press and spoke of those who lost their lives in the mass shooting saying "it could have been any school" and demanded tighter gun restrictions and a ban on assault rifles. They were supported by local activists the Raging Grannies who supplied songs, chants, and a bullhorn to students who took the lead.
Walkouts are planned nationally for March 14th at 10:00am local times. Students at Palo Alto's second high school, Palo Alto High School, will join in the cause of student safety from mass shootings that day.
