Pajaro Valley Teachers Call for Support

by Santa Cruz County News
Pajaro Valley teachers are asking for assistance from the greater community as mediation with Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) continues. Teachers have circulated English and Spanish informational flyers (which can be downloaded below) to share with parents and community members. The flyer states: "We are losing teachers to other school districts that pay better than PVUSD. Our schools are having trouble replacing them. Your children, our students, are suffering because of this financial disparity." Teachers have been negotiating with the district for a new contract since December 7, 2016.

According to teachers, the Superintendent of PVUSD has claimed there is "no evidence that teachers are leaving the district for surrounding districts due to their offer of higher salaries", yet PVUSD has averaged 60 unfilled/uncredentialed positions for most of the 2017/2018 school year. Teachers are asking, "Are you comfortable with your child being educated by a long-term sub or a teacher without a credential?"

The informational flyer lists several points of fact:

* PVUSD is one of the lowest paying school districts in the area.
* When teachers' salaries go up, so do other salaries in the community.
* Research shows that high teacher turnover negatively affects academic success.
* Higher teacher compensation is linked to better teacher candidates.

Negotiation updates can be read on the Pajaro Valley Federation of Teachers website:
http://pvft.net/category/negotiations/

Teachers are asking community members to call, email, or text the following message to the PVUSD Board of Trustees and the district Superintendent: “Keep our teachers in PVUSD with a fair salary increase now.”
