REP. BARBARA LEE BECOMES FIRST CALIFORNIA MEMBER OF CONGRESS TO SPONSOR IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION
ALAMEDA, CA - On February 2, 2018, Barbara Lee became the first California member of Congress to cosponsor House Resolution 621 (H.Res. 621), a measure calling for the impeachment of President Trump. (See https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-resolution/621/all-info?r=102.)
John Ota, of Alameda For Impeachment, a grassroots group based in Alameda, welcomed Representative Lee's action as a "significant and concrete step in the long but necessary process of removing a President who is constantly attacking the very foundations of our democracy and endangering our national security."
H.Res. 621, sponsored by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN), calls for the impeachment of President Trump on grounds of: obstruction of justice, violation of the Constitutional prohibitions on a U.S. official receiving money or gifts from foreign governments and/or from state governments, abuse of power by actions undermining the rule of law, and actions undermining the freedom of the press.
Rep. Lee became the tenth cosponsor of H.Res. 621 and the first from California. Lee has also voted twice in favor of impeaching Trump, when Rep. Al Green (D-TX) introduced impeachment resolutions on January 19, 2018 and December 6, 2018.
On both occasions, Republicans, joined by many Democrats, including several Bay Area members of Congress, succeeded in stopping the impeachment resolutions through motions to table the measures.
Members of Alameda For Impeachment had attended Rep. Lee's townhalls and other events, met with Rep. Lee and her staff, and gathered over 500 letters at the Oakland Womens March urging her to cosponsor H.Res. 621.
The group's success in persuading Lee to cosponsor H.Res. 621 shows "that people power works if people are persistent, organized and determined" in their efforts, said Ota.
Alameda For Impeachment now intends to focus on getting other members of Congress, especially those in the Bay Area, to support H.Res. 621 and impeachment.
