Inspired by the true story of Robert Hicks, the film Deacon For Defense directed by Bill Duke and starring Forest Whitaker offers a fictionalized story of the black citizens in Bogalusa, LA who took up arms to defend themselves against the KKK during the Freedom Summer of 1964. The film summarizes, dramatizes and fictionalizes but it accurately portrays the courageous, constitutional role these men played in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. There will be a post screening discussion led by Michael Lyon a local Bay Area activist and co founder of the SF Gray Panthers.
