Turning Point USA opens door for white supremacists on campus
Turning Point USA is a racist, anti-feminist, anti-intellectual organization backed by billionaires, the NRA, and members of the fossil fuel industry. It has organizations at hundreds of high schools and college campuses. And the group uses dirty tricks to incite others on campus.
[Note: I have reached out to Charlie Kirk, president of Turning Point USA, about my articles, but he has not replied.]
Violence erupted on the Colorado State University campus in early February 2018 when a small group of white supremacists battled anti-fascists outside a Charlie Kirk speech.
The two events were related because white supremacists follow Charlie Kirk and they support his cause as a mainstream white supremacist and leader of Turning Point USA (TPUSA).
"They are clearly not who they say they are. The members flake away very fast because they begin to realize what they believe isn’t what the leaders believe"--former state official for TPUSA
While Charlie Kirk denounced the violent white supremacists, he did not denounce white supremacy, which he tacitly supports on the back stage.
TPUSA is a racist, anti-feminist, anti-intellectual organization backed by billionaires, the NRA, and members of the fossil fuel industry. The pro-Trump, pro-Bannon 501c3 has organizations at hundreds of high schools and college campuses. And the group uses dirty tricks to incite others on campus.
*For years, Charlie Kirk publicly alleged that a less qualified woman of color took his slot at West Point.
*Kirk's news blog, Turning Point USA News (previously known as Hypeline) has mentioned Black Lives Matter more than 100 times, and stated that BLM was a domestic terror group.
*A writer in the Hypeline blog also referred to the classic Why the Caged Bird Sings as pornography.
Some TPUSA members have been linked to the anti-feminist group, Proud Boys.
TPUSA's Political Action
While Turning Point USA is most noted for their Professor Watchlist, and for unduly influencing student government elections, the organization uses its foot soldiers to support legislation allowing more campus access to white supremacists on campus.
From the Penn State University Collegian:
"According to (Turning Point USA's) Mattis, the bill’s provisions allow students or organizations on campus to file complaints against their institutions of higher learning in state court if they believe the institution has censored their legally protected speech."
"Legally actionable offenses include establishing free speech zones on campus, penalizing “hate speech,” charging prohibitively high security fees for events or banning student groups because of ideology."
"If the court finds the institution guilty, it has six years to change its policies before losing access to state funding. Penn State currently receives over $250 million annually from the state, an amount which makes up around 10 percent of its budget."
Turning Point USA's Professor Watchlist includes scholars such as Danielle Allen (Harvard), Robert Jensen (University of Texas) and Sara Goldrick-Rab (Temple University.]
In a recent piece by Jane Mayer in the New Yorker, Turning Point USA was exposed as racist organization that gained power by unduly influencing college elections.
Turning Point USA has also given out cash rewards for those who would help silence liberal voices. According to TPUSA literature, "priority will be given to students who led a movement or initiative that resulted in positive change (for example, eliminating a free speech zone, de-funding a liberal cause on campus, removing a biased and untruthful textbook from the curriculum, etc.)."
*Marcus Fotenos won $5000 for his work as the Student Body President at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Fotenos later lost his position when it was discovered that he was bribing students to vote for him.
*Joshua Recalde-Martinez also won $5000 for his work in aiding a student who secretly recorded a liberal professor talking about Donald Trump.
Comedy Central has spoofed Charlie Kirk. But is satire enough to slow down the cult of Charlie and his pro-Trump youth group?
Should teachers and activists be concerned about the growth of mainstream white supremacists like Charlie Kirk? John Warner, a contributor to Inside Higher Education thinks so.
TPUSA's top leadership (backed by billionaires, the NRA, and the fossil industry) have exhibited most, if not all of the elements of fascism.
Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
Supremacy of the Military
Controlled Mass Media
Obsession with National Security
Religion and Government are Intertwined
Corporate Power is Protected
Labor Power is Suppressed
Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
But will others follow in their concern about these mainstream white supremacists? Where are the teachers unions ( AAUP, AFT, SEIU) in condemning Charlie Kirk and TPUSA?
