Ah, student debt. A cynical way to ensure that our children, now young adults, understand their debt to society.
What if, instead, we recognized as the Morrill Land Grant Act and Homestead Act of the 1860s recognized, that a place to live, work and play is the foundation for a free and productive citizenry. The Morrill Land Grant Act meant to ensure that higher education was funded out of land values.
Bernie Sanders spoke of debt-free public higher education. Jeremy Corbyn of the UK's Labour Party speaks of it too, and he, at least, has proposed a way to pay for it. The Land Value Tax (LVT). If you own land which you necessarily are borrowing the use of from the nation, you should pay the nation, not private parties, for that use. That's Corbyn's plan. It could be Sanders' plan too if you'd push for it. To understand that tax, come along on a walking tour surveying San Francisco social movement history, highlighting LVT's intellectual debut in San Francisco back in the 1870s.
Get up, stand up . . . or sleep in.
