Historic Gathering – Legal Defense for Water Protectors - April 2, 2017
I was blessed to receive an invite to this wonderful fundraiser. We all gathered at 2p.m. and we did not leave until 5p.m. There were more than 150 of us!
Hosted by The Lakota People’s Law Project along with local artist Barbara Benish. The afternoon fundraiser was held at Barbara's art studio at 155 DuBois St. in Santa Cruz Ca.
Chase Iron Eyes and Daniel Sheehan were the guest speakers. Chase wrote in advance of the event,
"To all of my relatives,
I send my deepest gratitude for all that you have done to stand with us in our ongoing battle against the Dakota Access pipeline. Your involvement and financial support have carried us to this point and have made this urgent and enduring struggle possible. Now the battleground shifts to the courts of law and public opinion. This confrontation is on behalf of more than just Standing Rock. It is a fight for the survival of our very planet and everyone on it."
Wopila! — Chase Iron Eyes
Chase came to Santa Cruz to give his firsthand account of how it was on the front lines at Standing Rock. He, and others spoke regarding the fossil fuel industry and how Energy Transfers Partners has lied, attacked, and violated the civil rights of those protecting the water (The Standing Rock Water Protectors) Taking our money out of banks that invest in the Keystone and The Dakota Access Pipeline was also discussed.
Chase shared some details and stories, how he has been charged with in sighting a riot and trespassing. Chase is only one of some 800 protectors who have been arrested while some of the leaders have been charged with felonies including. Chase who could have to spend five years in prison for in sighting a riot (that he did not do) and trespassing on his own land!
