Building Football Dreams in Iraq

by Iraq Solidarity News (Al-Thawra)
Football is playing a major role in helping young people in Iraq, overcome the trauma and terror of war.
Former members of Iraq’s national football team joined star league players, local dignitaries and politicians, at the opening of new community pitches in the south of Iraq.

Scores of young Iraqis will now receive top class football coaching and will have the use of state-of-the-art all-weather pitches, thanks to a joint project between Britain’s AMAR Foundation, the Rumailah Operating Organisation and Iraq’s Southern Oil Company.

Already, the pitches are being used seven days a week and top-class coaching sessions are now being provided, to help bring Iraq’s young people up to a good standard through a “train the trainer” package, for aspiring young coaches.

The coaching staff is headed by Sadiq Alwohali, the founder of Football for Change. Sadiq developed FfC in 2006 to help create a new generation of players and coaches for Iraq. He holds the Level 3 English Football Association License and has worked for a number of famous Premier League teams.

Dr Ali Muthanna, the AMAR Foundation’s Regional Manager in Iraq, praised the efforts which have gone into getting these new football pitches and hopes, “we can find some great players who will go on to play in the Iraqi national team.”

Dr Muthana has also stated, that the AMAR Foundation also have plans to establish two more all-weather pitches, which will be added for use by the local community, by the end of 2017.

If you’re a football fan, player or if you’re involved in a local club, why not get involved and help the AMAR Foundation to nurture the football talent of young people in Iraq.

There are many ways you can help, by making a donation, promoting AMAR’s efforts in your teams programme or even through organising a fundraising game in your community.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
