2016 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Kwanzaa Holiday that began December 26, 1966 in the aftermath of the Watts Riots in Los Angeles, California. Today, Kwanzaa is celebrated globally, helping to expand the restoration of high cultural values and beliefs essential to elevate an ancient Pan African people to a new golden age of excellence.

Kwanzaa is a 7 day holiday, created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, is based upon a synthesis of ancient and modern “First Fruits of the Agriculture Harvest” or Kwanzaa.

Today, the 7 days, 7 symbols and 7 principles are celebrated by many faiths, cultures, and nations throughout the world as part of modern popular culture, a growing effort toward mutual understanding of differences, values and beliefs.

Today, Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor and chairman of Africana Studies at California State University in Long Beach continues to actively reflect deeply upon utilizing ancient Pan-African traditions as a moral foundation for modern life.

Dr. Molefi Kete Asante has written an informative journey through the mind of Maulana Karenga, one of the key cultural thinkers of our time. Dr. Karenga is an activist-scholar committed to a "dignity-affirming" life for all human beings.

Dr. Asante examines the sources of Karenga's intellectual preoccupations and demonstrates that Karenga's concerns with the liberation narratives and mythic realities of African people are rooted in the best interests of a collective humanity.

The book shows Karenga to be an intellectual giant willing to practice his theories in order to manifest his intense emotional attachment to culture, truth and justice.

Asante's enlightening presentation and riveting critique of Karenga's works reveal a compelling account of a thinker whose contributions extend far beyond the Academy.

Although Karenga began his career as a student activist, a civil rights leader, a Pan Africanist, and a culturalist, he ultimately succeeds in turning his fierce commitment to truth toward dissecting political, social, and ethical issues.

Dr. Molefi Asante’s carefully analyzes Karenga's important works on Black Studies and also his earlier works on culture and his later works on ethics, such as The Husia, and Odu Ifa: The Ethical Teachings is part of the living legacy of the founder of Kwanzaa.
He actively worked against the Black Panthers, some of whom were murdered, he collaborated with law enforcement, and even personally kidnapped and tortured women.
