Sex-trafficking in America
The issue of sex trafficking in America is putting many American children at risk of becoming sex trafficked.
As a twenty-three-year-old Sociology major at Sonoma State University, I have learnt some very bothering social problems and issues that are affecting people every single day. Being a California native almost my whole life, I have had the most gratifying experiences due to familial support and my continuous growth as a woman. Sadly, there are many people my age and younger who have not experienced anything good to begin with. I have recently studied child sex slavery in my Sociology of Childhood and Adolescence class. I was never so disgusted at the rates of sex slavery in the United States, alone. A 2015 CBS news article, The Forgotten Children: Investigating Sex Trafficking in AmeriaI, written by Ines Novacic explains that 1 in 7 children are victim to being coerced into sex slavery and about 300,000 children are at risk to becoming that 1 in 7 statistic (Novacic, 2015). It is shameful that we have let our country be a part of a what is to be known as a 10-billion-dollar sex slave industry where highly regarded political officials are supporting such a “business”. A widely known example of how children are coerced into sex acts is politician Anthony Weiner; he was caught sending and receiving intimate photos. Data shows that most of the children and teenagers are highly targeted through sexting or and the internet, just as Mr. Weiner did to contact a fifteen-year-old. I ask you to spread the word, as a concerned citizen we need to stop sex slavery in America before more children and families are torn apart by people who seek to exploit them in sex-work. Our country cannot be represented by politicians who engage in underage prostitution and continue to benefit the sex slavery industry! We need to warn our local communities about these atrocities as well as educate people about this social problem.
