2016 Local Heroes of Peace and Justice Awards
who will be honored at the Center's 8th Annual Awards Dinner!

Betty Reid Soskin is an anti-racism educator and political activist. She is receiving the Justice Advocate of the Year Award. Soskin is the oldest employee (94 years) of the National Park Service, serving the public at the Rosie the Riveter site in Richmond. There she leads tours, giving an African American perspective on local WWII history. This month she is scheduled to be a guest of Interior Secretary Jewell at the opening of the Museum of African American History and Culture. She also keeps a fascinating blog on her family history and current events in her life at Cbreaux Speaks.

Receiving the Peace Advocate of the Year Award is Cindy Sheehan, aka "Peace Mom". Sheehan is best known for her strong criticism of President Bush in the early days of the Iraq War after the death of her son, soldier Casey Sheehan. In 2005 Sheehan was one of the founders of Gold Star Families for Peace. Her leadership in anti-war activism has continued through the ensuing years. She is currently hosting and producing a radio talk-show, Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox Radio Show.
