SF Janitors Demand Union Contract
For the past week or so, the janitors in the San Francisco Financial District have had marches and rallies on Market Street and at various locations in the Financial District demanding a union contract. The latest was a Friday, July 29, 2016, 5 p.m. march down Montgomery Street with a sound truck in the lead, followed by red flags and a huge banner calling for Bread & Prosperity, with about 1,000 janitors chanting The People United Will Never Be Defeated, El Pueblo Unido Jamas Sera Vencido!

At every janitor demonstration, including today’s, the police have been out in full force with a couple dozen motorcycles unnecessarily blocking traffic, which traffic could easily be directed by the union organizers of the march who were escorting the parade and at all janitor demonstrations, as we do for all demonstrations, police in jumpsuits walking on the sidewalk on Montgomery Street which could only be to intimidate both the janitors and the people on the sidewalk since they were completely unnecessary and like all police, armed to the teeth, and about 6 police vans following this very peaceful labor march. Each cop costs San Francisco taxpayers at least $100,000 a year in salary plus benefits. The money spent on the police at these labor rallies could and should be spent to permanently house the homeless, who are now everywhere on Market Street and throughout the Financial District, sleeping on the ground and begging. Mothers with small children are now begging in the Financial District, everywhere, every day, a sign of increased poverty. None of this begging and homelessness existed before 1980. It started when Democrat Carter was president.
The janitor labor parades were especially uplifting as they are the answer to the horror show of the week, a former Goldwater Girl, now millionaire, fascist, war criminal Democrat, Hillary Clinton, being crowned by her anti-labor, warmongering Wall Street sponsors as a presidential candidate, claiming to represent all women, which of course, is ridiculous. This hand-picked candidate has so much contempt for women and labor that she chose an anti-abortion, anti-labor, pro-war candidate for vice-president. What is most frightening about Clinton is her well-deserved moniker of being the War with Russia candidate, and you can be sure the Republicans also favor with Russia, as the Democrat-Republicans have been promoting this anti-Russia hysteria since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, which 100th anniversary we will celebrate in 2017.
The Democratic Party showed its true colors when some of the delegates at this week’s convention chanted No More War when Democrat Leon Panetta, former War Secretary and CIA Chief, spoke, to which the Democratic Party responded by shutting off the lights so the TV cameras could not show who was for peace at this Nazi rally. The Clinton delegates responded with the usual fascist chant, “USA, USA,” as if being for peace is unpatriotic, when exactly the opposite is true.

This month we commemorated the 1934 San Francisco General Strike with the annual month-long Labor Fest at http://www.laborfest.net/2016/2016schedule.htm which still has some events on calendar. This general strike, along with the 1934 Minneapolis and Toledo strikes, made possible in 1935, Social Security, unemployment insurance and the right to organize labor unions all being made the law of the land. We need far more labor organizing if we are to see serious change in this country. We must remember the words to labor’s anthem, Solidarity Forever, which state, “They have taken untold millions which they never toiled to earn, but without our brain and muscle, not a single wheel can turn. We can break their haughty power, gain our freedom when we learn that the union makes us strong.”
