US Deportations & Supreme Court Protested in SF, Hedge Fund Vulture Capitalist Ron Beller's Caliber Charter In Richmond And Mexican Workers and NAFTA Privatizations Pushed by US
WorkWeek hears about a protest of the San Francisco labor movement to defend immigrant workers from deportations that was held in San Francisco on June 24th. The San Francisco Labor Council is calling for a halt to all deportations and legalization of undocumented workers in the US.
Next, WorkWeek looks at the struggle against hedge fund vulture capitalist Ron Beller the operator of the Caliber charter schools in Vallejo and Richmond. The California Teachers Association CTA and Northern California District Council of Carpenters UBC is opposing the sale of the Richmond Adams Middle School to Beller for $60,000 for a non-union built school without unionized teachers and staff.
Last we cover a protest at the Mexican consulate in San Francisco to protest the massacre of teachers and community members in Oaxaca, Mexico by the army and police which have been armed by the US. San Francisco teacher union members and leaders supported the protest. We then interview Al Rojas who is a founder of the United Farmworkers of America and also with the Labor Council For Latin American Advancement LCLAA in Sacramento. He discusses the role of NAFTA which has been used to privatize Mexican Telecom, railroads, oil and now education. Both Clintons have helped Carlos Slim and other billionaires to seize the Mexican wealth according to Rojas. He also talks about the need for unity between US workers and Mexican workers. He also discusses a visit of Mexican trade unionists for an international conference on privatization on July 16 in San Francisco that is part of LaborFest http://www.laborfest.net
