SF Housing Activists Protest Displacement at Super Bowl Site

by Rubble
Hundreds of activists marched through downtown to the site of “SuperBowl City” Saturday to protest unrelenting economic displacements, part of a series of protests during this 3-week long corporate extravaganza in attempts to highlight to the world the city’s pathetic political priorities. Hear housing organizer Tommi Avicolli Mecca describe aspects of the problems in short stops in front of Twitter headquarters at 7th and Market and at the Market and Powell cable car stop, speaking to the hordes of tourists wandering spending money wearing team football clothes (7:30 minutes).

Evictions for profit - “legal” and illegal - continue at an unrelenting pace despite several years of attempts at measures to resolve the problem. The reported $50 million dollars given away in expenses and diverted city services could immediately house 500 homeless people. Groups included Eviction Free San Francisco, Plaza 16 Coalition and a new group SOS–San Francisco which popped up to spotlight the current rash of artist evictions. SEIU 1021 and other labor unions led a parallel rally and march to spotlight abusive labor conditions for football stadium workers.

Issues protested the past two weeks include housing, labor, police murders and abuses of blacks and Latinos, and homelessness. Downtown has been like a police state, against all SF residents to "protest and serve football tourists. Streets are shut down for residents, with Homeland police armed with all kinds of weaponry. Muni stations are patrolled with a heavy handed approach. Homeless people have been pushed out of downtown to remote SOMA locations to make way for wealthy partiers and big money political propaganda.

Homeland Security is leading this state of affairs. Since the Patriot Act and related measures, anything interfering with economic development (i.e. private corporations) is terrorism. The SuperBowl climate is about the same as if an Occupy demonstration or anti-globilization protest. San Franciscans continue loud, confrontational demands to our completely unresponsive government.

All of the public outcry against spending $5 million on a police state rehearsal under the cover of Stupid Bowl Police State Plaza instead of housing the homeless did not stop the Democrat-Republicans from inviting the billionaire owners of the football gambling rackets to our public office building, City Hall, for a party, and giving $12,000 of our tax dollars to a police agency to prevent entrance by #FireChiefSuhr protesters to this event on February 4, 2016. The outrage of the SF taxpayers against the "volunteering" of SFMTA workers on the city dime at Stupid Bowl Plaza did not stop the same "volunteering" of airport workers on the city dime at the airport to escort people at the airport. Supervisor Kim, who is working on legislation to effectively ban this garbage, said she has received thousands of Emails, phone calls and US mail letters protesting this theft of our tax dollars. See
