Let Them Eat Fluoride

by NYSCOF
Money and Politics, Not Science, Propels Fluoridation to its 71st Birthday
Today is the 71st birthday of the biggest public health blunder of all time - water fluoridation. Science tells us fluoridation is outdated, ineffective and harmful. However, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent propping up and implementing fluoridation by organized dentistry, dental insurance companies, oral health coalitions, children’s dental health groups and industries that sell the stuff.

Today, the General Accounting Office reports that Medicaid children still aren’t getting the care they need, mainly because most dentists won’t accept Medicaid patients.

Yet dentists claim that they care so very much about poor children that they want them to drink fluoride every single day – even though they have no evidence that any child is fluoride-deficient whether low-income or not. In fact, the opposite is true, CDC reports that up to 60% of adolescents are fluoride-overdosed and are afflicted with dental fluorosis – white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth. Yet, tooth decay crises occurs in all fluoridated cities and states. See http://www.FluorideNews.Blogspot.com

Evidence is mounting that shows fluoride damages more than teeth and is ineffective. For example, in 2015 the following were reported or published.

1. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

The study entitled, “Exposure to fluoridated water and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder prevalence among children and adolescents in the United States: an ecological association,” was published in the journal Environmental Health. The authors, psychologists Christine Till and Ashley Malin at Toronto’s York University, discovered that states with a higher rate of artificially fluoridated water had a higher prevalence of ADHD.

2. Hypothyroidism (Study links fluoridation to thyroid disease)

The study, entitled “Are fluoride levels in drinking water associated with hypothyroidism prevalence in England? A large observational study of GP practice data and fluoride levels in drinking water,” is the first study to ever look at fluoridation and hypothyroidism in a large population (in this case, England).

The findings led to the researchers calling for a “rethink of public health policy to fluoridate the water supply,” adding “consideration needs to be given to reducing fluoride exposure, and public dental health interventions should stop [those] reliant on ingested fluoride and switch to topical fluoride-based and non-fluoride-based interventions.”

3. New IQ Study Links Fluorosis to Neurotoxicity

This new pilot study in China, Association of lifetime exposure to fluoride and cognitive functions in Chinese children: A pilot study, (by Choi AL, et al. 2015) published in Neurotoxicology and Teratology was carried out at fluoride levels, which overlap levels used in U.S. fluoridation programs. They didn’t measure IQ specifically in this study but reported the results of a very simple test: the child’s ability to repeat a sequence of numbers both forwards and backwards. Even children with very mild dental fluorosis performed poorer on this specific mental development test, than children without fluorosis

4. HHS Admits Overexposing Americans to Fluoride

In May, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) admitted that the fluoride levels, which they promoted and encouraged as safe, has damaged children’s teeth. Because of the huge increase in dental fluorosis (white spotted, yellow, brown and/or pitted teeth) on the teeth of at least 41% of young teenagers, HHS says that water fluoride levels should be lowered to 0.7 mg/L (formerly most communities used 1 mg/L while the guideline was 0.7 – 1.2 mg/L) and in ten years they’ll check children’s teeth to see if they were right about this new level.

5. The Evidence Keeps Piling Up

• UK Cochrane Group could find no quality research proving fluoridation reduces tooth decay, but did find that 40% of children in fluoridated areas have dental fluorosis.

• An American Journal of Public Health article (Carstairs, 2015) reports fluoridation was adopted prematurely without harms and risks fully explored.

• A Legal Scholar reports that fluoridation violates numerous legal and ethical human subjects research protocols (William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review)

• In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, FAN uncovered documents showing that since 1962 officials at the U.S. Public Health Service knew that black Americans were disproportionately harmed by fluoride with significantly higher rates of dental fluorosis (permanent damage to the enamel) rates compared to white Americans. But for over 40 years they hid this information from communities of color.

• At least 75 more studies report adverse fluoride effects in animals and humans.

Some useful information for communities fighting fluoridation

• Water Fluoridation and Environmental Justice. A report by FAN submitted to the EJ Interagency Working Group in response to their solicitation for public comments in September. This group comprises all of the U.S. regulatory agencies. http://fluoridealert.org/wp-content/uploads/ej-report-9-25-15.pdf

• Submission to the National Toxicology Program in response to its solicitation for public comments on its nomination of fluoride as a developmental neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor. http://fluoridealert.org/wp-content/uploads/connett-ntp.11-6-15.pdf

People need to take back their water supplies from the special interest groups and demand that their local legislators vote to stop fluoridation and demand of their state and federal legislators to stop funding or accepting funds for fluoridation schemes anywhere in your state, whether from government or private entities.

"Nyscof" is actually Carol Kopf, the "Media Relations Director" for the New York antifluoridationist faction, "Fluoride Action Network". It is not surprising that the first sentence on the page is a complete fabrication. Every piece of the “evidence” provided has been thoroughly examined and refuted (references below).

fluoridation opponents (FOs) resort to using "research" that has been continually debunked as misused or poor quality like the Harvard IQ study (poor quality & irrelevant), Cochrane Fluoride Review (misused), 2006 NRC Fluoride Report (misused – it didn't address fluoridation), Peckham hypothyroidism study (poor quality) or Malin's ADHD study (poor quality).

This post is actually for those who are reading these comments and wondering whether the fear-based propaganda of FOs should be believed. Short answer – NO

Long answer - Let’s examine the logic of FOs:

1 - FOs claim that fluoride ions are a toxic, unapproved drug, adjusting fluoride levels to 0.7 ppm in drinking water is illegal, forced mass medication, optimal fluoridation levels are liable to cause significant negative health effects in a population and everyone should be able to make their own decisions whether or not to ingest a poisonous byproduct of the fertilizer industry.

2 - FOs claim that fluoridation is ineffective at preventing dental decay in a community, and/or that any potential benefits are far outweighed by the proven risks of harm.

3 - FOs claim that fluoridation at optimal levels can cause significant health problems. Fluoride Action Network website states that, “Fluoride is a highly toxic substance that can cause a range of adverse health effects.” The site lists the following adverse health effects expected from exposure to low or moderate levels of fluoride ions (levels to which individuals in fluoridated communities would be exposed): arthritis; increased bone fracture rates; reduced IQ; brain damage (neurobehavioral defects and impaired fetal brain development); cancer (bone, bladder and lung); various cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, arterial calcification, arteriosclerosis and electrocardiogram abnormalities); significant dental fluorosis (noticeable brown stains on the teeth); diabetes; kidney disease; reduction in sperm quality and testosterone levels; accelerated sexual maturation in females; and hypothyroidism. A video, Our Daily Dose, emphases these claims by highlighting children playing while outlining the litany of horrors they and their parents can expect from drinking fluoridated water.

4 - FOs claim:
--- that over 70 years of scientific evidence actually proves that fluoridation is ineffective at reducing dental caries and causes the health issues listed above.
--- the evidence against fluoridation is overwhelming, unambiguous, conclusive and readily available for anyone to evaluate.
--- the scientific evidence in support of fluoridation is poor quality, weak or nonexistent.
--- it is meaningless that that over 100 national and international health organizations support fluoridation as safe and effective.

5 - Companies were so desperate to get rid of HFA, that they convinced dentists in dental school that it was good for people's teeth and we, being gullible little soldiers with miniature Black & Decker drills in our hands, blindly followed the pied piper. This claim was contributed by Pediatric Dentist, Johnny Johnson – he was there…

If ANY of these five claims were valid, fluoridation would, indeed, be completely reprehensible. No sane, competent scientist or medical professional with a conscious would endorse an ineffective, blatantly dangerous practice.

AND YET, over 100 national and international science and health organizations (and their thousands of members – experts in their fields ) as well as six Surgeons General since 1982 DO SUPPORT the practice of fluoridation as a safe and effective public health policy to reduce dental decay and resulting health problems. These organizations include The World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association and the American Dental Association.

Ask FOs to explain this FACT. I have asked repeatedly, and the replies have provided an interesting window into the FOs' belief system.

Why, in spite of the alleged overwhelming evidence against fluoridation, would the American Academy of Pediatrics (with over 62,000 members) – an organization committed to protecting and improving the health of children – make this statement, “Water fluoridation continues to be one of the most important tools in our toolbox to prevent tooth decay in children and adults. Hundreds of studies have affirmed community water fluoridation as a safe, equitable, and cost-effective way to protect the oral health of the population.”??

Logically, why would the membership not question this statement (or initiate a mutiny) if they had any concerns?

I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation. Except perhaps that the overwhelming majority of experts in the fields of science, dentistry and medicine are correct in their interpretation of the evidence and fluoridation is, IN FACT a safe and effective health initiative.
