We need your help to give the City staff the strength to uphold the resolution the City Council ratified last week, and negotiate the lease renewal for all of this small but important garden. As of now, the landowner is proposing to remove a third of the land from the garden (to convert it to equipment storage), starting next Friday, November 13.
The City has set up a meeting tomorrow to discuss the landowners' proposal with representatives from Parks and Rec, the mayor and several council members.
We need supporters to come out to show the city that it must try to negotiate with the landowners to renew the lease on the whole beach flats community garden.
For many years the City "leased" the land without paying the owner. Now we are asking the city to explore other possibilities offering payment or to the landowner with a lease, until a purchase plan can be developed.
Thank you so much for coming out to previous community meetings to support the beach flats community garden. Our work is not quite done. If we do not turn out again tomorrow, this small garden in a very dense neighborhood garden risks being reduced in size by 33%.
Members of the Beach Flats Garden Coalition were so pleased when the City Council voted last week to direct city staff to work with the seaside company with the goal of purchasing the existing garden site, and to negotiate to extend the lease on the current garden while staff works on the purchase options.
Let's help them make every effort to achieve the goal.
