California State University Faculty Conclude Strike Authorization Vote
Yesterday, members of the California Faculty Association (CFA) at the 23 campuses of the California State University system concluded a statewide vote on whether or not to authorize union leadership to call a strike if contract negotiations with management fail to result in a fair deal.
The outcome of the vote will be announced on November 4 at 10:00 am/PT by CFA President Jennifer Eagan and Bargaining Team Chair Kevin Wehr.
CFA officers and bargaining team members from campuses throughout the state will be available to comment on the outcome and the significance of the vote. More details about the November 4 announcement will be released early next week.
Faculty have dubbed the push to improve faculty earnings the “Fight for Five” — meaning a 5% general salary Increase. Cal State University management clings to an offer of 2%.
“The Chancellor’s 2% is simply not enough to make teaching in the CSU sustainable,” said CFA President Jennifer Eagan.
She said, “We work hard to provide quality education for our students, but we also need to support our families. Education is a road to the middle class for our students, and teaching CSU students certainly should secure a middle class living for the faculty. The status quo is simply not good enough.”
Over the last 10 days, faculty voted online or in person. The ballot read:
( ) YES, I authorize the CFA Board of Directors to initiate job actions, up to and including strike, if, at the conclusion of the statutory bargaining process, a resolution on salary for 2015-2016 with the CSU administration has not been reached.
( ) NO, I do not give strike authorization. I am willing to accept the Chancellor’s last offer of 2%.
The in-person strike authorization votes will be counted and certified during the coming days in the presence of a neutral outside observer to assure the legitimacy of the results.
Talks on salary in the second year of the contract reached impasse and went to mediation, which was unsuccessful. Earlier this month both sides were certified to factfinding, the final stage in the “statutory” bargaining process. During factfinding, a neutral third party is chosen to hear both sides. Together with a representative from each bargaining team, the neutral third party writes a factfinding report that recommends how a settlement could be achieved. After the sides have 10 days to study the report and perhaps reach a settlement, the factfinding report becomes public.
