City Council to Hold Special Public Meeting on November 4, 2015

To Consider Impacts of Rising Rents on Alameda Residents Including Consideration of a Temporary Moratorium on Rental Increases and Evictions without Just Cause in Alameda

The Alameda City Council will be holding a special meeting on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, to consider the impacts of rising rents on Alameda residents. The meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue.

At the special meeting, the City Council will receive a study on the City’s rental housing market, prepared by BAE Urban Economics (BAE). To address the rental housing market, including rapidly rising rents and low vacancy rates in Alameda, City staff will also present a range of policy options that the City Council may consider, including consideration of a temporary moratorium on rental increases or evictions without just cause. The BAE rent study and the staff report for the special meeting will be available on the City’s website by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.

In anticipation that the City Council Chambers may reach full capacity during the special meeting, overflow rooms will be available for the general public in City Hall conference room 360, and in room 123B of the Alameda Free Library at 1550 Oak Street.

City personnel will also be available in City Hall conference room 160, immediately before the special City Council meeting, starting at 5:00 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m., to answer tenant and landlord questions related to the City’s Rent Review Advisory Committee (RRAC) mediation process or for those wishing to submit an official complaint of a significant rental increase for the RRAC’s review.

Looking for a good turn out of East Bay, Oakland and Alameda people to support the Alameda Renters Coalition with stopping excessive rent increases and no-fault evictions in Alameda. The landlords will definitely show up to stop us. Come and support us on Wednesday night at 6:00 PM.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
