Over the last couple of years, three international conferences have taken place on the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons. Topics at the conferences included the possible devastation from an actual attack - already seen in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 - and the effects of nuclear fallout from testing in the 1950's and 1960's.

The U.S. sent a delegation to the third of these conferences in Vienna last December, after dismissing the first two. Even so, they somewhat embarrassed themselves with a presentation basically justifying nuclear weapons - in agreement with almost nobody else at the gathering and to the chagrin of many in attendance.

Among peace activists in the U.S., and people in the non-nuclear weapons states worldwide, there is a call for a new narrative about what nuclear weapons are capable of - thus the urgent need to implement key provisions of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT). We will try to facilitate that narrative by presenting Dr. Tom Newman, a prominent member of Physicians for Social Responsibility, to give a talk on "The Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons".

As both a pediatrician and longtime anti-nuclear activist, the San Carlos-based Dr. Newman is well-poised to offer a sympathetic but frank perspective on nuclear weapons and what they can do (and already have done) to people. Tom recently completed 9 years on PSR's national Board of Directors, and is currently on the Steering Committee of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of PSR. He is also a longtime member and former board member of PASMC. Tom is a Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Tom has spoken about nuclear weapons to students from high school to medical school, in hospitals and medical meetings, and most recently at local Rotary Clubs. Come hear his latest version of why we need to eliminate this scourge from our planet.
The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.
